Campillo cracks with the right.

Campillo cracks with the right hook.

SHELTON, WA, August 2, 2014 – Never underestimate a former world champion. At one point in time former WBA title holder Gabriel Campillo had been on top of the heap in the Light Heavyweight division, but after a few disappointing losses his run as a contender in the 175 lbs. class had been seen by many as close to done. Coming into last Friday’s ESPN2 Friday Night fights main event at the Little Creek Casino in Shelton, Washington, he was being looked at as a stepping stone — a past-it name that would look good on undefeated prospect Thomas Williams’ record. But Campillo proved to be far from past it, schooling the young hopeful en route to a fifth round stoppage and claiming the NABO title and a spot atop the IBF rankings. The skill, determination, and experience were the difference in the fight as Campillo showed he had an edge over his opponent in all of those areas.

In the first two rounds the fight appeared to be getting away from Campillo (24-6-1, 11 KO’s, 174.8 lbs.). Williams (17-1, 12KO’s, 175 lbs.) used the ring well, moving and firing hard combinations at a very busy rate. The hand speed and energetic approach was racking up points for Williams, but Campillo remained determined and had a look of confidence as he patiently stepped forward and, as the rounds wore on, began to find his mark with short, stiff jabs. Thomas Williams vs. Gabriel Campillo as ESPN Friday Night Fights Returns to the Little Creek Casino This Friday

by on Jul.29, 2014, under Boxing News

By Ricardo Ibarra

The Little Creek Casino in Shelton, Washington is quickly becoming a premier venue for high level boxing in the Pacific Northwest. In the last year they have staged a number of high profile events including cards televised by Show Time and ESPN.  This Friday, the venue once again hosts a show featuring some of the best up and comers in the sport with a stacked ten bout card, promoted by Goosen Tutor Promotions.

The card will be broadcast by ESPN2 and is headlined by an intriguing light heavyweight match-up between undefeated Thomas Williams and former world champion Gabriel Campillo in what promises to be an all action bout. Williams has been on a roll as of late, looking very impressive in his last few fights, taking out former top contenders Enrique Orenlas and Cornelious White by TKO. His bout against White featured one of the wildest first rounds in recent memory with both fighters touching the canvass in an all out slugfest before Williams was able to punctuate the fight, stopping his opponent in the same round. This opponent will mark the best opposition he’s faced in his twenty six fight career. (continue reading…)

CHICAGO, August 16, 2013 – It was fitting retribution.  The International Boxing Organization said they’d strip him of their title  for tonight’s unsanctioned fight and the International Boxing Federation jumped in, christening it as an eliminator for their crown.  Then, Andrzej Fonfara went out and bludgeoned Gabriel Campillo inside eight rounds before an estimated 15,000 at U.S. Cellular Field.  So much for politics.

A native of Warsaw, Poland residing in Chicago, Fonfara (173 lbs., 24-2 and 14 knockouts) sets a pattern in the first round. He’s throwing hard, hurtful and straight blows at Campillo (175 lbs., 22-6-, 9 knockouts) a wily contender hailing from Madrid, Spain, who fires back in spots.
