Unlike Many Celebs, Ali Takes Time for Common Folk

Anyone who is around celebrities on a regular basis, wether it is as a fan, paparazzi or being in their inner circle in some capacity, will get to see how each one is in regards to how they treat their fans. You have many different personalities involved and each one seems to handle fame, adulation and attention just a bit differently. I’ve seen instances when an extremely well known former champion turned trainer very ignorantly not only refused to sign an autograph on a boxing glove for a fan but he also used extremely vulgar language to express how much he didn’t want to do it. I was there when a well known Hollywood figure refused to sign an autograph for one of my pre-teen amateur boxers at Madison Square Garden. I’ve seen famous actors and national championship college basketball players quickly sign their names so illegibly for another of my young boxers that it resembled what it would look like if a four year child scribbled on a piece of paper so they could see if the pen had any ink in it. Amateur boxing is in some ways like professional boxing but it is also very different in certain regards. As a pro you want to be (you MUST BE) much more careful early on with your matchmaking. You want to gain experience but you don’t want to lose, either. It’s a business and you have to maneuver your way through the game until it’s time to really show and prove.

The beautiful thing about amateur boxing, though, is that it doesn’t matter nearly as much when you lose. It’s all just experience for the tournaments that you hope to win down the line. When you are around other amateur boxers they NEVER ask your record, they always simply ask “How many fights you got?” Because they subconsciously know that wins and losses don’t matter nearly as much as the experience you’ve accumulated in the process of so many bouts. Former light heavyweight boxing contender and current boxing trainer, “Ice” John Sully, joined the father of Floyd “Money” Mayweather (who is rumored to be slated to fight fellow superstar Manny Pacquiao in May) — Floyd Mayweather, Sr. (also a former boxer and current trainer) in signing boxing gloves. ┬áCommenting on the experience, Scully wrote, “Floyd Sr. and I signing pairs of gloves at Foxwoods today after finishing up filming of the second season of “Knockout” for Nuvo-TV.”
