Lamont Peterson vs. Amir Khan II Set for May 19: Highly Anticipated Rematch Lands at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas with HBO to Televise

by on Feb.11, 2012, under Boxing News, Press Releases

LOS ANGELES, CA, February 10, 2012 — For 12 rounds last December, Lamont “Havoc” Peterson and Amir “King” Khan battled it out in one of the most compelling championship bouts of 2011. When it was over, controversy raged over the officiating and the final judges’ verdict, but in the end Peterson won a split decision capturing Khan’s world championship belts. On Saturday, May 19, the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nev. will host the highly anticipated Unified Super Lightweight World Title rematch the boxing world has clamored for as Lamont Peterson will defend his WBA World Super Championship and IBF World Championshipagainst Khan in a fight televised live on HBO’s World Championship Boxing.

Their first fight was a pitched and close battle waged in Peterson’s hometown of Washington, DC that was considered by most boxing experts to be a “Fight of the Year” candidate. It was a classic battle of contrasting styles with Peterson brawling and banging while Khan used his lightning quick speed and boxing ability. The deduction of two points from Khan by the referee for a seldom-called foul (pushing) proved to be the difference in the outcome of the close fight, leading to questions being raised as to who actually deserved to win the decision. Khan immediately filed multiple protests following the fight, much to the ire of Peterson who felt Khan’s actions tainted his victory and were an act of disrespect. On May 19, the fighters will have the opportunity to settle the score on neutral ground in Las Vegas. (continue reading…)

My colleague Robert Uzzell and I recently attended three major fight cards on the east coast. The events just so happened to take place on back-to-back-to-back weekends. Hey, who says all the good fights land in Vegas? As gas prices soared to about $3.80 per gallon, we wondered if Greyhound or even Air Tran would be a feasible option in the future. Nevertheless, we gassed up the vehicle and began our journey.

First up was the much-anticipated rematch between Antonio ‘The Tijuana Tornado’ Margarito and Miguel ‘Junito’ Cotto. The house was packed as the majority Hispanic crowd came to support their respective compatriots. There were maybe three times as many Cotto supporters than there were fans for Margarito. Peterson-Khan Should be Considered Fight of the Year

by on Dec.13, 2011, under Boxing News

By Adam Pollack

The Lamont Peterson – Amir Khan fight has to be considered fight of the year. Wonderful intense battle by two young elite prime warriors giving it their all. Some brutal blows were landed by both in 12 rounds of excellent high level combat. The speed, footwork, counters, body shots, uppercuts, blazing combinations, were all just wonderful. Kudos to both for showing us what a true championship fight is all about.

But what is all this talk of controversy? I saw no controversial fight. I saw no home cooking. Stop trying to make every big boxing fight out to be controversial or a fix. Stop trying to react emotionally, but instead look at matters in a fair and objective manner. It isn’t good for the sport to cast aspersions on that referee, nor are the criticisms of his point deductions fair. I respectfully disagree with HBO and those who say the referee was unfair. First of all, neither knockdown in the 1st round was a knockdown. The first was correctly called a slip and a trip. The second was a trip and a push. Right there, for the referee to call that a knockdown shows that he had no bias against Khan. In the heat of the moment, though, referees have to make snap judgments, and sometimes they get it wrong. Happens in the NBA, NFL and the like. Part of the sport. But honestly, watching it live, without the benefit of instant replay, I was not sure whether or not it was knockdown. Have to go with the referee’s judgment. (continue reading…)
