HAMMOND, IN, November 27, 2013 – Continuing a Thanksgiving Eve tradition, Hitz Boxing presented another Black Wednesday Fight Night at the Venue at the Horseshoe Casino, featuring mostly local boxers building their skills and their resumes. Though there were a few lackluster bouts, there was more than enough explosive action, especially when the local favorites went after each other for bragging rights. Lending a somber note to the evening was the ten count tribute to recently slain fighter Michael “The Midnight Stalker” Walker.

In the non-local attraction, Ghanaian Yakubu “Black Mamba” Amidu (20-4-2, 18 KOs), now based in Los Angeles, returned to the Heartland following several losses and a heartbreaking split draw against Juan Carlos Burgos to face journeyman southpaw Rynell Griffin (7-18-2, 2 KOs) in a Lightweight bout scheduled for 10 rounds. Though he has come up on the losing end of most bouts, Griffin’s experience in the ring with some of the best in his weight class showed as he used impressive movement and combinations in the slow first round, coming under Amidu’s punches to land to the body and often coming back up top. Amidu seemed tentative, though he threw and landed a few powerful single punches. (continue reading…)

CICERO, Ill., April 14, 2012 – It took all ten rounds to do it, but tonight, Wauchula, Florida’s Edner “The Cherry Bomb” Cherry (132 lbs., 29-6-2, 16 KO’s) overcame the guile and awkward punching of Chicago’s gutsy – and slippery – Juan Carlos Martinez, whose spotty record of 18-13-1 and four knockouts belies a penchant for tackling top flight competition nearly every time out.

Martinez, the local spoiler, receives loud cheers from the crowd (perhaps 1,000 strong, most of whom are working class Mexicans) upon entering the ring, while loud boos overwhelm scattered applause greeting Cherry. Clearly, Martinez is fit, but ordinary-looking and smaller, whereas Cherry’s upper body packs muscles that seem hewn from dark mahogany. (continue reading…)

Curtis Tate (L) tries to avoid a charge from Edward Gauch

The first fight of the evening featured Oakland, Tennessee’s Curtis Lee Tate (252 lbs.,3-3, 3 KO’s) against Hannibal, Missouri’s Lance Edward Gauch (280 lbs., 3-4, 3KO’s) in a four-round heavyweight bout that promised not to go the distance, given the knockout records of the participants. The first round started slow, with Tate finding his range with a jab. When Gauch started countering with uppercuts, the fighters switched to some inside fighting. Tate seemed to have the sharper punches at the outset, but Gauch began looking for and finding targets, especially for his heavy right hand. Near the end of the round, Gauch’s punches began to take their toll, though Tate rallied at the end. (continue reading…)
