Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.: Novice

This past Saturday evening at the Reliant Arena here in Houston, World Boxing Council Middleweight title holder Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. stopped used up Peter Manfredo at 1:52 of round five in a fight that more closely resembled a local Golden Glove bout than a world championship fight. The bout was a fairly entertaining brawl between two C level fighters while it lasted, but if Chavez Jr. is a true world champion, I’m a monkey’s uncle.

Young Chavez has a plethora of problems as a fighter. He was getting nailed flush with sucker right hands from an ordinary pug like Manfredo that my grandmother could have gotten out of the way of, due to the fact that he has not learned how to bring his left hand up after jabbing and hooking. The affair was a milling one in the first round as Chavez marched after his man in the odd high step style of his father’s and continually walked face in to rights and lefts from the former “Contender” series star, but a higher work rate won the round for Junior.
