DAVID TUA vs ROBERT
DANIELS
MOUNT WHITAKER vs DAVID
DIXON
FRIDAY, JULY 21 – THE REGENT LAS VEGAS –
SHOWTIME
LAS VEGAS, NV (June 29, 2000) - DAVID TUA,
the consensus mandatory
challenger to world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis, continues
his quest
for a world title when he defends his IBF Intercontinental crown
against
former world champion ROBERT DANIELS in the main event of a
SHOWTIME
CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING fight card on Friday, July 21, at The Regent
Las Vegas.
In the 10-round co-feature, WBC Continental Americas Heavyweight
Champion Lanc
e "Mount" Whitaker will take on heavyweight knockout
artist David "Dangerous"
Dixon. SHOWTIME will televise the card, an America Presents
promotion, in
association with Budweiser, at 11:30 PM ET/PT.
Tuaman (36-1, 31 KOs), of Samoa, earned the
bronze medal for New Zealand
in the 1992 Olympic Games at Barcelona, Spain. Tua has won nine
consecutive
bouts since suffering his lone setback to Ike Ibeabuchi on a close
and very
controversial 12-round decision on June 7, 1997. In his last bout,
Tua
required just 51 seconds to dispatch veteran Obed Sullivan. It was
Tua's 14th
first-round knockout, and his 25th inside three rounds. Tua, who
has
flattened five world-rated contenders, has vowed to bring the
world
heavyweight title back to the United States, his adopted country.
Daniels (39-4-1, 32 KOs), of Miami, Fla., has
won 14 of his last 15 with
one
no-contest. A former World Boxing Association cruiserweight
champion, Daniels
has lost only two fights since 1991. He won the WBA title in
November 1989
and made two successful defenses. Daniels, who has never been
knocked out, is
also a former Intercontinental Boxing Council (IBC) and
International Boxing
Organization (IBO) titleholder.
Whitaker (20-1, 17 KOs), of Granada Hills, CA.,
had an outstanding
amateur career, going 40-6 while winning numerous titles in
international
competition. He turned pro in July 1996 and won his first 18
bouts, 16 inside
the distance, before losing a disputed 10-round decision to Lou
Savarese in
March 1999. Whitaker, who at 6-foot-8 is one of the world's
tallest
heavyweights, captured the World Boxing Council (WBC) Continental
Americas
title on a 12-round decision over Monte Barrett in August 1999.
The WBC's No.
12-ranked heavyweight contender retained the title on a
second-round knockout
over Thomas Williams on June 11, 2000.
Dixon (21-3-2, 19 KOs), a hard-hitting slugger
of Los Angeles, CA, and
former NABF title challenger, has won 90% of his victories by
knockout. Dixon
has not been involved in a fight that went to the scorecards in
nearly 10
years. The last time he was involved in a bout that went the
distance was
July 8, 1990.
