GOMEZ KNOCKS OUT GREAVES
On Saturday (07/08/2000), at the Widnes Kingsway Leisure Centre in
England,
Michael Gomez (UK) defended his British and WBO/Intercontinental
super
featherweight titles succesfully, knocking out his challenger Carl
Greaves
in the second round.
Gomez started out well, a bit more patient as we are used to see
from him.
He worked well, throwing some nice uppercuts. Near the end of the
second
round, Gomez threw a beautiful left hook, sending Greaves to the
canvas,
where he failed to beat the referee's count, the fight ended at 3
minutes
and 9 seconds of the second round.
Gomez fought only two weeks ago, as he beat Carl Allen on the
Tyson-Savarese undercard in Glasgow, Scotland. Gomez improves his
record to
21-3 with 13 KOs. He can now buy a new house, as he planned before
the
fight. He wants to step up to another level, maybe a fight for the
European
or Commonwealth title. He even called out Acelino Freitas, the WBO
super
featherweight champion.
Greaves drops to 20-5 with 2 KOs. He fought for the British title
after
having won the British Masters tournament.
In a good undercard fight, welterweight Paul Jennings (UK) used
his boxing
skills to outpoint Paul Denton (UK); the referee scored the bout
58-56 in
favor of Jennings. Near the end of the third round, Jennings
stepped up the
pace, but held his hands down and his chin up and paid the price:
he was
floored by a left hook from Denton. But Jennings came back well
from that
knockdown.
Jennings, who improves his record to 7-0 with 1 knockout, still
has to work
on his defence. He is not a big puncher, his only KO came against
tony
smith in the first round of his pro debut.
Denton, very experienced, falls to 7-15-2 with 6 knockouts.
Also on the card, middleweights Darren Rhodes (UK) and Jason
Collins (UK)
drew over four rounds, the referee's scoring card reading 39-39.
In a fight made at super featherweight, Tony Mulholland (UK)
outpointed
Leroy Williamson (UK), 79-74.
Super welterweight Takaloo (UK) stopped Ernie Smith (UK) in the
fourth
round. This fight was actually scheduled for the Tyson-Savarese
undercard.
