ELGIN, ILL (July 10, 1999) -- HECTOR CAMACHO, JR., of Puerto Rico, kept his undefeated record intact tonight, winning the vacant WBA-North American super lightweight title tonight via a TKO 9 over tough veteran Miguel Angel Ruiz of Mexico. Camacho, currently world-rated No. 6 by the WBC and No. 8 by the WBA, improved to 22-0. Ruiz fell to 21-6-1. In the Main Event, former WBC featherweight champion, GOYO VARGAS, captured the vacant WBC FECARBOX (Central America & Caribbean) lightweight title, winning a convincing unanimous decision over Ricky Quiles, of Puerto Rico. Vargas, who is currently world-rated No. 2 by the WBC, improved to 40-6-1. Quiles dropped to 28-4-1. The fight, which took place at a sold-out Grand Victoria Casino, was televised live nationally by Telemundo as part of its monthly Boxeo series. It was promoted by America Presents.
