Juan Carlos Gomez to Defend Title Against Bruce Scott: Fabian Weber

Dusseldorf 12 July 1999.
German based Cuban Juan Carlos Gomez will make the fifth defense of his WBC Cruiserweight Title next Saturday, when he takes on Jamaican Bruce Scott. The contest will headline an event that includes eight fights and that will take place at the Phillipshalle in Dusseldorf.

It will be the second world title shot for the 29-year-old Bruce Scott, 21-4 (15 KO4s), who was born in Kingston, Jamaica, but is now living in England. Scott is the reigning British and Commonwealth Champion, a title that he won in an upset last year from the Irish hope Darren Corbett by knockout in the 10th round. Afterwards Scott got the chance to fight for the WBO Cruiserweight Title against the Brit Johnny Nelson, but lost on points.

The 26-year-old Juan Carlos Gomez, 27-0 (22 KO4s), has great aims for his future. "I want to make three more fights at Cruiserweight, the final one being a unification with another World Champion", the tall Cuban says, who was named best puncher of the Cruiserweight division by The Ring. "Then I want to move up to the Heavyweights. Of course I wouldn't immediately fight the biggest guys of the division. I would start with some tune-up fights until I get used to the weight."

But often Gomez, who is enjoying his life, finds it hard to work to rules and to keep disciplined. "I like to party, to meet girls and I like to drink a beer or smoke my cigars from time to time", Gomez explains, who was born as one of nine children in Havannah, Cuba.

In his childhood he had to work very hard, when he was helping his parents with the sugar cane fields. Most parts of his youth Gomez was living in boarding schools for sports, where the Cuban regime prepared him for his future career as an Amateur boxer. In 1995 Gomez left his home country and started his professional boxing career at Universum Box-Promotion in Hamburg.

"I admire boxers like the Klitschkos, Artur Grigorian or Istvan Kovacs, who focus their whole lifes on boxing", Gomez compliments his team mates. "They never drink or smoke and they always live clean. I try to take them as example and I try to do the same. But it's hard for me, because my mentality is different. I like to live my life and have fun."
