EARLY SUNDAY MORNING: PEDRO FERNANDEZ
BIG RIPOFF IN ANOTHER "KING" FIGHT

There was another blatant rip off in a prizefight last night, and Don King was the promoter.  That is almost being redundant isn't it? I mean, heists in boxing seem more often than not to end up involving the Don, don't they?

THE STING

The opening bout on SHOWTIME featured a King fighter in Jorge Elicer Julio, a once beaten Colombian who was defending the 118-lb. title of the WBO title for the third time.   The opponent was a fighter moving up from 115 lbs. in Julio Gamboa.

LIKE A QUARTERHORSE

Out of the gate, Gamboa, now 24-3, was on the counter punching Jorge Elicer Julio like a cheap suit.  Time and again, Gamboa was beating the Colombian to the punch with terrific left crosses fired from the southpaw position.

FIVE OF FIRST SIX

The fight stayed in that mode for most of the 36 minutes of battle. Occasionally, Julio, now 42-1, would land some decent punches, but they were "extremely" rare and far between.  Down the stretch, the challenger from Nicaragua dominated Elicer Julio, to win going away on my card 117-111, or nine to three in rounds for Gamboa.

GET OUT THE AIR SICKNESS BAG

The first score announced was that of Ray Santos.  He had it 115-113, favoring Elicer. This immediately brought back memories of Jean Williams and her identical score sheet tabbing Evander Holyfield a winner a fortnight ago against Lennox Lewis.

Stu Winston tabbed the contest 115-113, for Gamboa, while the third judge had the match even at 115-115.

WHAT WERE THESE GUYS LOOKING AT?

They were watching an upset in the making, and they resisted the change. The jurists went with the Don King promoted fighter in a scrap that was so one sided that SHOWTIME analyst Bobby Czyz had to lean over backwards to come up with a 116-112, or eight to four in rounds for the Nicaraguan Gamboa.  Those scoring the fight at home on the Internet FOR SHOWTIME had it 117-111, for Gamboa as did yours truly

BEYOND SHILLING

"I've never seen a fight where a champion so good, is getting hit so often."   The Fight Doctor was talking about house fighter Jorge Elicer Julio.

NO MAS

I have always admired the many talents of SHOWTIME's Fight Dr. Ferdie Pacheco,  But throughout the fight, Ferdie was pulling so hard for Julio in a fight in which he was getting his clock cleaned, was all by itself a statement.

LIKE BURNT' TOAST

Ferdie Pacheco is through!  Once a good color commentator, Pacheco should now be arrested for getting behind a microphone as he no longer has even an air of objectivity anymore.

NEVER THOUGHT

When I was growing up in the business, I never imagined Ferdie Pacheco, an MD, author, artist, and a poet would become Don King's talking head.  And Ferdie, before you get pissed off at the messenger, go back and listen to yourself during the Gamboa-Elicer fight.

USE TO BE'S

Pacheco was quite credible as the NBC fight guy years ago.  But old age and the $20 K he pulls down per TV appearance have him flapping around the broadcast like a fish on a hot sidewalk.

BACK TO THE DIABOLICAL ONE

Just like an architect laying out plans to build a house, promoter Don King went into last night's card looking to match both winners against each other in the near future.   Both titilists, WBO guy Jorge Elicer Julio and the IBF's Tim Austin are both Don King "house" fighters.

Going in, everybody knew that this was supposed to be a showcasing event for both DK fighters.  Only Gamboa refused to go along with the Don's choreography and proceeded to put a good whipping on the Colombian.  The fight was so one sided that the viewers at home who were scoring on the Internet had it 117-111, or nine-three in rounds for Gamboa.

BOTTOM LINE

Is that King promoted the second biggest heist of the year!  Oh, but he also put forth the ultimate in clip jobs when King's fighter Evander Holyfield was awarded a draw in a fight that he too had lost 117-111, or nine to three in 180 second stints against Lennox Lewis.

I TOLD YA'

That just before he was to lose his IBF 140 lb. Belt to Terron Millet, King summoned then champ Vince Phillips before him and cut his pay 33% from $150 K to $100,000.  King had also fronted Phillips a fad wad of cash, and according to one source Mrs. Phillips was irate as she was given a check for only $35 grand.

HOLYFIELD WANTS OUT

Defrocked heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield filed for Divorce from his wife of 2 ½ years Janice Holyfield Friday afternoon in Georgia.  Evander, who has taken the term "devout" Christian to a new level, for he has fathered at least two children out of wedlock in the last 24 months.

THE PAIN

The soon to be ex-wife is no hobo.  Janice is an MD that specializes in the treatment of pain.  Somehow, I can see the pain of having your newly married husband baking two loaves of bread in some other women's ovens?

A RARITY: KING DUPED IN SCAM

Over the years, I have had a few people call my show and imitate Mike Tyson.  In fact, one guy was so good that I wasn't sure if it was Tyson, or not.  On Thursday, a guy making like he was Mike Tyson called Don King in Florida.  According to the New York Post the caller told Don that he wanted to make up, and that he needed to see the wirehaired promoter at once.

This induced King to jump on a plane and fly directly to Maryland, where Tyson is serving time for assault.

"LET ME IN, HE WANTS TO SEE ME"

Is what King was screaming when he got to the Maryland correctional facility in Montgomery County. "He called me and wants to see me.  Go ask him?"   The guards did. They came back and told King that,  Tyson said he could kiss his, well you know.

"Tyson said he wants nothing to do with King. He hates him," said the guard.

RED FACED KING PR TEAM ISSUES STATEMENT

"Because of someone's warped sense of humor, Don flew from Miami to Maryland in vain, thinking he could be of aid to someone in their time of need," said King's PR release.

WILL IT EVER BE KARMA TIME FOR DK

King has not had his share of bad Karma in a lot of people's minds.  So, when one DK enemy heard about King being the victim of a hoax he said, "I'd like to buy that guy dinner.  For a year!"
