MELDRICK TAYLOR ACCUSED OF ATTEMPTED RAPE

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Meldrick Taylor, a 1984 Olympic gold medalist and former junior welterweight champion, was in custody Tuesday after reportedly being accused of attempted rape.

The 33-year-old boxer who went on to become a minister is accused of attacking a woman Sunday, police told WCAU-TV. Police would not tell the station where in Philadelphia or what time the attack is said to have occurred....................

McCAIN ABLE TO STAY IN BOXING CLEANUP RING

I've never been a big proponent of federal intervention into boxing. Most federal probes into a sport long steeped in incompetence and corruption have been little more than photo-ops for politicians who lose interest once the television cameras are shut off. Besides, who needs another ineffectual bureaucracy? My standing joke is that a giraffe is a horse designed by a federal committee.

But now that his spirited presidential bid has ended, Sen. John McCain, a former boxer at the U.S. Naval Academy, has put on the gloves again in an attempt to save what's left of a battered and bloody fight game. And the pugnacious Arizona Republican just might have the stuff to go the distance this time................

HOPKINS' MAY TITLE DEFENSE TAKEN OFF HBO CARD
The action was apparently in retaliation for the removal of injured Brian Barbosa as his opponent. Jay Searcy, Philadelphia Inquirer

A scheduled title defense by IBF middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins has been removed from a May 13 HBO card in Indianapolis. The Philadelphia fighter was dropped by promoter Murad Muhammad in apparent retaliation to HBO's decision last week to remove an injured Brian Barbosa as Hopkins' opponent.

Muhammad, who could not be reached for comment, promotes Barbosa and light-heavyweight champion Roy Jones Jr., who is defending his title in the headline event on the Indianapolis show...................
