47th Oregon Golden Gloves Tournament
By Katherine Dunn

An enthusiastic crowd, probably close to 500 strong, turned out for the Saturday night Championship finals of the 47th annual Oregon Golden Gloves on March 3. This smoothly run show in the big room under the grandstands at the Multnomah Grey Hound Park in Portland, Oregon included a raffle with snazzy boxing memorabilia among the many prizes. This is a progression tournament for Open Senior men, 16-years or over, with more than ten bouts experience. Proceeds of this show go to finance the Oregon champions trip to the Regional Golden Gloves Tournament in Las Vegas later in March. Open senior amateur bouts are four rounds long, each round lasting 2 minutes. Novice and junior bouts are three rounds. While women compete in the state Golden Gloves championships, they do not progress to regional and national competition. The reason given is that there are not yet enough women participating to warrant progression.
