The Cyber Boxing Zone Newswire -- APRIL 20:2001
Commotion At The Ocean II
April 21 boxing at Chinook Winds Casino
Lincoln City, Oregon
By Katherine Dunn

The last time Chinook Winds Casino in Lincoln City, Oregon staged a boxing show, the main event was Fernando Vargas vs Winky Wright. Diego Corrales was on the under-card against John Brown. The big time reporters flew in and HBO broadcast the show. But the casino didn't sell many tickets for that one. Prices too high for the neighborhood. The marketing not quite on track.

On Saturday, April 21 Chinook Winds goes boxing again, but this time on a smaller scale. True, the Sugar Ray Leonard/Roberto Duran comedy duo will be there to shine and sign. But the guys in the ring won't be big names. The focus is on Oregon boxers.

In the original plan, Leonard's fighter Gary Jones of Washington D.C. was to fight Oregon's Quandray "Candy" Robertson for the IBA Intercontinental Jr. Middleweight championship. Jones is a light-fisted boxer and Robertson is a crude banger, so the possibilities seemed at least interesting. Then Jones scratched out& cut in sparring was the story. Promoter Patrick Ortiz of Ringside Ticket, Inc. corralled tough Ron Weaver (26-6, 20 KO. s) of New Orleans to meet Candy Robertson (10-3, 8 KO).

But Robertson was late getting his medical exams done, and on Tuesday, the week of the fight, the eye doctor diagnosed a detached retina. A mad scramble for a last minute replacement ensued. On Thursday afternoon a casio spokesperson announced that Weavers' opponent would be Eric Mitchell of Phoenix, AZ.

Meanwhile, the co-main is solid. That's a Womens' International Boxing Federation 143 lb world title match between Lisa Holewyne (12-7-1, 5 KO) of Austin, TX and Marischa Sjauw (12-4, 3 KO) of Surinam.

Oregon fighters dominate the undercard four-rounders, though four of the eight boxers are making pro debuts.

Heavyweights, Ruben Torres (1-0) of Portland, OR vs Shawn Greenwood (0-1) of Baker City, OR

Jr Middleweights, Billy Kirwan (3-1) of Portland vs Dominic Rivera (3-7) of Portland.

Welterweights, Apolinar Arzola of Portland debuts vs Jorge Alonso of Portland, also in his debut.

Bantamweights, a pair of debuts for Sergio Hernandez of Salem, OR vs Jesus Valdez of Los Angeles, Ca.
