"Bad" Bennie Briscoe

Born: February 8, 1943 Augusta, GA
Professional Record: 66-24-5 (53 kayos) 1 NC

Bennie Briscoe was one of the most beloved fighters in Philadelpha boxing history and one of the best Middleweights to never win a world title. Briscoe used a crouching bob and weave style punctuated with a wicked left hook, along with a sturdy chin, to dominate many opponents.

Briscoe beat several outstanding fighters during the decade or so he spent as a contender, including George Benton, Vicente Rondon, Tony Mundine, and Eddie Mustafa Muhammad.

One of Briscoe's best performances was his 1967 draw with the great Carlos Monzon, in Buenos Aires. A title fight rematch with Monzon proved fruitless, as Monzon had improved and took a comfortable decison.

Briscoe's nemesis, though, wasn't Monzon, but instead was Colombian Rodrigo Valdez. In three fights with Valdez, Briscoe came up empty three times. In their first bout Valdez won a close decision for the NABF Title. In their second bout Valdez recovered from an early plastering by Briscoe to shockingly starch Briscoe with a one-two in the seventh round, Briscoe's only defeat by stoppage in his career. In their final fight, Valdez won a close decision for the vacant title, when both of them were past their best days.

After the third loss to Valdez, Briscoe became a stepping stone fighter, losing to up and comers such as Vito Antuofermo and Marvin Hagler before retiring in early 1983.
