Gamez was a capable boxer who compiled a 35-12-1 record with 26 knockouts; Leo is one of only two Latino boxers to win world titles in four weight divisions, Roberto Duran being the other; During his career, he won the WBA Super Flyweight Championship of the World, the WBA Flyweight Championship of the World, the WBA Light Flyweight Championship of the World, the WBA Minimumweight Championship of the World, the WBA Fedelatin Flyweight Championship and the Light Flyweight Championship of Venezuela

Leo defeated such men as Hugo Rafael Soto, Juan Antonio Torres, Shiro Yahiro, Pichit Chor Siriwat, Gilberto Gonzalez, Dioberto Julio, Hideki Todaka, Alvaro Mercado and Bong Jun Kim
