Harmon was a scrappy competitor during a very talented period of fighters; He was a top welterweight contender for several years and was ranked #6 in the world at one time during his career; He lost only 13 of 89 bouts but scored just 24 knockouts

Willie defeated such men as Canada Lee, "Sargeant" Sammy Baker, Hilario Martinez, Barney Adair, Young Saylor, Clyde Hull, Jack Zivic, Eddie Shevlin, Pete Hartley, Eddie Burnbrook and Clarence "Sailor" Darden in official verdicts as well as besting Pete Latzo, Myron "Pinkey" Mitchell, Alf Mancini and Billy Alger in newspaper verdicts ("No Decision" bouts)
