Ramos was a confident fighter who was very popular and personable; He liked the bright lights, big city and beautiful women; "Mando" was not particularly fast on his feet but packed plenty of power in his punches; During his career, he won the WBC Lightweight Championship of the World and the WBA Lightweight Championship of the World

He defeated such men as Ultiminio "Sugar" Ramos, Carlos Teo Cruz, Yoshiaki Numata, Pedro Carrasco, Raul Rojas, Ruben Navarro, Hiroshi Kobayashi, Jorge "Baby" Salazar, Ray Echevarria, Kang Il Suh, Frankie Crawford and Beau Jaynes

Ramos was inducted into the World Boxing Boxing Hall of Fame in 1988
