Matthews was lean and muscular and carried plenty of firepower; Charlie Mitchell said that Matthews was tough, rugged and could take punishment; He was the Heavyweight Champion of New Zealand during his career; William Naughton wrote that Matthews' brother was owner of the California Athletic Club in San Francisco

During his career, Godfrey defeated such men as Jim Pettengell, Jack O'Neill, Bill Wilkinson, Charles Lange, Jack Brady and Charlie Richardson
