McAuliffe was a big and powerful man who threw sledge-hammer blows; He was not a good boxer but had size and strength on his side

Joe worked at a tannery near San Francisco and often went to the Athletic Club at the "Mission" in 'Frisco; After his boxing career ended, he went back to working at a tannery

During his career, McAuliffe defeated such men as Dick Matthews, Mike Brennan, Paddy Ryan, Frank Glover, Mike Conley, Tom Lees, Pat Killen, and Patsy Cardiff

Perhaps, the best fight of his career came in 1888 in a losing effort against the great Peter Jackson over 24 rounds
