Cushing was wiry and quick and carried a stinging punch; He looked more like a school-teacher than a fighter but he could handle himself well; He was a brother of Tom Cushing, who did some fighting; Mike was the 126 Pound Champion of America during his career

During his career, Cushing defeated such men as Jack Hopper, Harry Bartlett, James Liddy, Dan O'Hara and Billy Ellingsworth
