Fres Oquendo Targets Sanders in February In September, Puerto Rican born Fres Oquendo of Chicago lost a highly controversial decision in a bid for Chris Byrd's IBF title. Though disappointed, the confident Latino is hopeful that 2004 will be his year. Oquendo recently surfaced at a recent 8-count Promotions show in Chicago.
JA: You suffered a disappointing loss in your last outing. Is there anything on the heavyweight scene coming up for you? FO: Yeah, either a February 7th or 14th date Corrie Sanders of South Africa, for the number one position for the WBC. With a win, I'm hopeful that I will get a chance to face Lennox Lewis. I want Lennox Lewis. JA: What do you think about the recent fight between Vitali Klitschko and Kirk Johnson? FO: Kirk Johnson? He came in there looking, like, for a payday. He looked like an “opponent”; he looked like a Phil Jackson, Bert Cooper, an over-the-hill type fighters. He didn’t come in to win; he just came to get paid, I think. JA: Vitaly Klitshcko has become the mandatory challnger for Lewis' WBC title. What do you think of Klitschko overall? Do you think he’s going to be a tough opponent, or do you think he’s too limited? FO: Ah, Klitschko’s still a big questionmark, because I just beat the guy who beat Klitschko, which is Chris Byrd, so that puts me in a good position. So, he’s still yet to be tested. JA: Besides Lennox Lewis, who is the man you most want to face? FO: Chris Byrd, because he robbed me of my championship.
