Godfrey fighting for shot on US Olympic Boxing Team
Press Release

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence heavyweight amateur boxer, Matt Godfrey, will compete in the 2004 Everlast U.S. Championships (Nationals), January 13-17, at Colorado Springs. Godfrey will be a representative of PAL (Police Athletic League) in the 201-pound division.

First and second place finishers in each weight class will qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, February 16-21, in Tunica, Mississippi. Godfrey’s friend and stablemate, Pan-Am Games super heavyweight champion Jason Estrada, already has qualified for the trials. Winners at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials will advance to the U.S. Olympic Team Box-Offs, Feb. 27-28, in Cleveland. The Box-Offs winners qualify for the U.S. Boxing Team and earn an August trip to the Olympic Games in Greece.

“Matt has been sparring with a few guys, including (pro) Robert Wiggens (at Manfredo’s Gym in Pawtucket),” Matt’s trainer Dr. Roland Estrada reported. “He’s looked pretty sharp and I’m expecting big things from him at The Nationals.”
