Godfrey captures gold medal at U.S. Nationals
Qualifies for U.S. Olympic Trials Feb. 16-21

Press Release

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (January 18, 2004) – Providence heavyweight Matt Godfrey last night (Saturday) captured the Gold Medal in the 201-pound division of the 2004 Everlast U.S. Championships (Nationals) at Colorado Springs. Godfrey, representing of PAL (Police Athletic League), also qualified for the U.S. Olympic Boxing Team Trials, February 16-21, in Tunica, Mississippi.

Godfrey defeated Chazz Witherspoon (Paulsboro, PA) by decision, 13-9, in the championship final of The Nationals.

Matt will join his friend and stablemate, Pan-Am Games super heavyweight champion Jason Estrada, at the U.S. Olympic Boxing Team Trials, where the winners of the two brackets in each division advance to the U.S. Olympic Team Box-Offs, Feb. 27-28, in Cleveland. The Box-Offs winners qualify for Team USA.

“In 2001 I told the local (Providence) media I figured Jason had a 100-percent chance of going to the Olympics and Matt 70-percent,” Jason and Matt’s trainer Dr. Roland Estrada said. “Matt’s percentage has gone up and now I’m more confident that both of these guys will make it to the Olympics.”
