Arambulet injured; Porpaoin vs. Landaeta fight for WBA Interim Minimum Title

Maracay, Venezuela (January 20, 2004) - WBA Minimum weight champion Noel Arambulet informed the WBA on Tuesday that he will not be able to defend the title against No. 1 contender Chana Porpaoin as scheduled next January 31 due to a knee injury produced during a training session.

Arambulet went through a medical exam performed by Dr. Arturo Reyes and Dr. Aurora Torres on Tuesday and subsequently sent a letter to the WBA office confirming that his injury is serious enough to prevent him from taking part of the fight scheduled for the 12th edition of the Latin American Boxing Festival – WBA “KO Drugs”, scheduled for January 31st at El Poliedro in Caracas.

As a result, the WBA has decided to put Arambulet on “champion in recess” status and will sanction a bout between No. 1 contender Porpaoin and No. 12 contender Juan Landaeta as an Interim title fight.

The WBA will make a final decision on Arambulet’s case after receiving official communication from specialists doctors at the Instituto Nacional del Deporte de Venezuela (National Sports Institute of Venezuela), who will perform a new examination on Arambulet in the next few days.
