Rivera-Mayorga April 17
Press Release
WORCESTER, Mass. (February 11, 2004) – WBA welterweight champion “El Gallo” Jose Antonio Rivera’s first title defense April 17 will indeed be against former WBC & WBA welterweight title-holder Ricardo “The Matador” Mayorga at a site to be determined.

The 30-year-old Rivera (37-3-1, 24 KOs) captured the WBA title last September by winning a 12-round decision from previously unbeaten (38-0) Michel Trabant in Berlin. Mayorga (26-4-1, 23 KOs) is coming off a majority decision loss to Corey Spinks this past December in their unification bout.

“I’ve been waiting for an opportunity like this all of my career,” Rivera said. “I feel my time has come. I’m going to train like I’ve never trained before in my life to make sure I take advantage of this opportunity.”

Rivera’s manager, Steve “Tank” Tankanow, added, “We’re ecstatic Mayorga finally has agreed to fight Jose. Mayorga is one of the best fighters in the world and we welcome the opportunity to knock him out once and for all.”
