Cuevas, Bravo and Holifield Triumph, Garcia Edged in "Latin Warriors" Undercard! By Ben Torres at Ringside
Freddy Cuevas (R) digs a hard right to Danny ONeal's body
On a brisk night in the Chicago suburb of Chicago, Illinois, things quickly heated up at the Hawthorne Race Course on the undercard of the bouts promoted by Dominic Pesoli's 8 Count Productions and Top Rank. To start the evening off, Chicago's own Ottu Holifield (pro debut) engaged in a back and forth struggle with game Butch Haijack (1-2-1) of Detroit Lakes, MN. Haijack pressed the action but Holifield countered with lead uppercuts and effective enough movement to pull out a 4 round unanimous decision.
Hometown tough man Trinidad Garcia (3-0-1) took on strong and sturdy Joe Lynch of Buffalo, MN, in a compelling 4 round match up at 154 pounds. Lynch (2-0-0, 1 KO) started fast and put pressure on Garcia, who countered with some effective right hand leads. The exchange heated up in the second when Garcia caught Lynch with a right cross that sent the Minnesota natives mouth piece flying to the other side of the ring. In the third, Lynch cornered Garcia and sent him sprawling to the canvas with a beautiful and well timed uppercut. The game Garcia got up and finished the round but kept getting caught by Lynch's right. The fourth and final frame saw both men going toe to toe with Garcia countering off the ropes well and Lynch trying to capitalize on the success he had in the third round. Lynch was given the UD by scores of 39-36, 40-35, 38-37. This writer had the fight 38-37 for Garcia. In the fifth bout of the evening, super welterweight Freddie Cuevas (23-7-1, 16 KOs) was cheered on by his windy city supporters as he exhibited slick defensive and offensive skills against capable Danny Neal. Neal (8-4-1, 2 KOs), from Columbus, OH employed a strong jab to keep Cuevas at bay. However, after Cuevas made some adjustments in his footwork he was able to counter effectively with left hooks that snapped Neal's head back on a few occasions. Cuevas then began to go to the body in the third and outhustled the skilled Neal for the rest of the bout. Judges scored the bout 60-54 twice and 59-55 respectively for Cuevas.
The final and most electrifying moment of the evening involved Chicago's Oscar Bravo (20-2-0, 17 KOs), and Miguel Aguila (10-31-1, 1 KO) of New Orleans, LA. Aguila appeared a little shaky from the onset and moved to the center of the ring with his chin up and very exposed. Bravo initially tested Aguila's body by backing him into the ropes. Bravo then quickly shifted his attention to Aguila's chin with dramatic results. The muscular Aguila bounced off the canvas but was clear enough to rise and continue which wasn't long. As Aguila was trying to move away, he moved right into Bravo's punching power where Barvo ended the night by dropping Aguila hard for the second and final time. All in all a very entertaining and competitive fight card by Pesoli's 8 Count Production and Top Rank.
