CLASSY JEFFRIES KEEPS IFBA TITLE The Seven Feathers Casino & Hotel Resort in Canyonville, OR only puts on a couple of professional fight cards each year, but they do it well. On Saturday, Nov. 6, the capacity crowd was enthusiastic and the fights, compliments of promoter Patrick Ortiz of Ringside Tickets, Inc., were genuinely contentious. The referees, alternating bouts through the evening, were Jim Erickson and Mike Fisher. In the main event IFBA Featherweight World Champion Kelsey Jeffries, 125 lbs, now 30-8-1, 2 KO’s, of Gilroy, CA, defended her title for the fourth time with a 10 round unanimous decision win over Trisha Hill, 126 lbs, now 7-5-1,4 KO’s. of Atlanta, GA. Hill holds the ISKA Lightweight Kick Boxing title. The judges scored it a near-shut-out, with 100-90, 99-91, 99-91 all for Jeffries.IFBA President, Judith Kulis also presented Jeffries with the award for IFBA Fighter of the Year for 2003. Jeffries defends her 126 lb title successfully, and commonly steps in with bigger opponents to stay busy. This was her 6th bout of 2004. But she prefers to fight at her natural 122 lbs. Typically, Hill was taller and appeared generally bigger than Jeffries. It didn’t matter. Jeffries attacked from the first bell on, took control with fast, intense combos to head and body, and never allowed Hill to come out of her defensive posture. Jeffries has been training for the past 2 years with Buddy McGirt, and her originally slick-boxing techniques have been enhanced dramatically with power and improved defense. To Hill’s credit, she took a lot of punishment from the hard punching Jeffries, but kept rallying gamely and stayed on her feet to the end. The final bell unleashed a standing ovation for what was clearly world-class boxing. On the Undercard: 4 rounds, James "Famous" Ramos, 132 lbs, now 4-3-1, 1 KO, of Portland, OR won a unanimous decision over Braulio Lopez, now 0-2, of Portland, OR. 4 rounds, Juan Roman, 131 lbs, now 2-2, of Portland, OR won a majority decision over Juan Jaramillo, 131 lbs, now 3-2, 1 KO’s, of Portland, OR. The scoring was 40-36, 39-37 for Roman, and 38-38. 8 rounds, Rafael Ortiz, 143 1/2 lbs, now 9-5-1, 9 KO’s, of Portland, OR stopped Nalo Leal, 142 1/4 lbs, now 1-3-1, of Spokane, WA at :36 of the third round. 4 rounds, heavyweights, James Brock, now 9-18-3, 4 KO’s, of Los Angeles, CA won a split decision over Rodney Moore, now 7-12-3, 2 Ko’s, of Denver, CO. No weights were announced for this bout. Scores were 39-37, 39-37 for Brock, and 39-38 for Moore. 6 rounds, Angelo Torres, 129 lbs, now 11-12-2, 5 KO’s, of Tacoma, WA fought to a draw with Greg Piper, 128 lbs, now 7-3-1, 3 KO’s, of Portland, OR.
