Sölden – A busy and successful boxing year 2004 came to an end for the cooperating promoters Universum and Spotlight in the Austrian Alps in 2000m height. An inspired crowd of 1000 boxing fans at Freizeitarena Sölden, many of them tourists who came for skiing and mountain climbing, got to seeeight heavyweights fighting each other, as well as ten other boxers between 63 kg and 80 kg. All nine contests of the event were broadcast live. The first four fights were shown at 18:30 on the internet on http://www.boxing.de . The last five were broadcast at 20:30 on Eurosport TV.

In the main event, a heavyweight duel between stable mates Taras Bidenko (Spotlight) and Konstantin Onofrei (Universum), Bidenko won by technical knockout at 2:58 minutes of round 7. The 24-year-old Ukrainian improved to 14-1 with 9 knockouts and captured two belts: The WBO intercontinental title and the international German championship, a title for all fighters with a German boxing license.Onofrei dropped to 19-2 with 13 knockouts.

Second attraction in Sölden was the comeback of South African heavyweight contender Corrie Sanders, conqueror of Wladimir Klitschko in March 2003. After an eight month rest the 38-year-old former world champion decided to give his career a second run, this time under the banner of Universum Box-Promotion.

Sanders jumped in at the first available boxing event to realize his goals and knocked down Russian Alexei Varakin four times in the first two rounds until referee Erich Stümpfel reached the count of ten at 1:59 minutes of round two. With this victory the South African southpaw backed up once more his reputation as the most feared quick knockouter in the heavyweight division. Sanders, who fought for the first time since his WBC world title battle against Vitali Klitschko on April 24, improved to 40-3 with 30 knockouts. Varakin dropped to 21-13-2 with 12 knockouts.

For the year 2005 the intelligent police officer set two goals for himself: Winning a world title and fighting a rematch against either Vitali or Wladimir Klitschko.

The South African gentleman obviously enjoyed his time in Austria, not only because of his successful comeback. That’s why he decided to stay in Sölden together with his girlfriend and wants to ski for the first time in his life.

The next boxing events in 2005 will be on January 15 (Universum, Magdeburg) and on January 18 (Spotlight, Cuxhaven).
