Cruiser Prospect Aaron Williams Ready for ‘Stone Park Showdown’ and More! By Juan C. Ayllon

Normally, this would seem like brash words for a fighter with only three fights—3-0-0, 2 KO’s—under his belt, but for the nine-time amateur nations winner, all things are possible. Williams, who will be fighting on Saturday at the Casa Italia in Stone Park, Illinois on the under card of Bobby Hitz’ “Stone Park Showdown!” granted this writer an exclusive interview.
On how he’s doing: Aaron Williams: I’m all right. On his preparations for the fight: AW: Everything [has] been going well. I’ve been having a couple fights—ah—they have been pulling out, so, I’ve been staying ready. Just getting stronger and learning more about the sport of boxing. I’ve just been just, like, I’ve been working on like fighting on the inside, so, that’s about it. On whether he’s still incorporating weight training in his routine: AW: Yeah. We like light reps, all light reps. On who he’s fighting on Saturday: AW: Some guy named Harvey Jolley. All I know, he’s a tall guy; he’s like 6’ 4” and that’s all I know. And he’s currently two and oh. That’s all I know right now, so. On plans beyond this fight: AW: My plans are just like, after this fight, plan on going six rounds. On how he would describe his style to someone who’s never seen it: AW: Like, people would say I fight like Muhammad Ali [combined] with Tommy Hearns. JUAN AYLLON: So, you’ve got that knockout power? AW: Uh huh! On his favorite punches: AW: Jab-right, jab, right hand, double jab-right hand. I can throw a left hook to the body. On big names he’s beaten in the amateurs: AW: I beat a guy named Matt Godfrey. We had three good fights. Each fight we had, we had good, tough fights. I eliminated him out of every national tournament. If it weren’t for me, he’d have probably won them, though. But, every time we fought, we fought in the National Championships. Every time we fought! On whether he’d like to fight Godfrey again in the pros: AW: Hopefully, you know, somewhere down the line, we’ll fight for a little title or something like that. Hopefully. On who he would like to fight, like world champions O’Neal Bell, Mormeck and others: AW: I would like to—like later on, down the road—to fight all of them guys, thinking like, well, I think I’d like the good names in the cruiserweight division. I’d like to first take over the cruiserweight division, then go on up to heavyweight and try and take over the heavyweight [division]. I don’t have no targets [at heavyweight]; whoever (is) there at that present time, that’s who I’m going to take on. Go over the top then—top guys—that’s who I’m going to fight and take on. On whom he has been sparring with: AW: I’ve been sparring with [WBO Heavyweight Champion] Lamon Brewster. So, that’s about it. They [the sparring sessions] seem to be going good. We work really good together. He like me and I like him. Aaron will be appearing at “The Stone Park Showdown!” at Casa Italia, 300 Division Street, in Stone Park, Illinois. Doors will open at 5 PM and the fights will start at 6 PM. All tickets will be $35.
