STONE PARK, IL, August 27, 2005- As we make our way into Casa Italia's outdoor boxing match I start off by noticing the sunlight shinning down from behind thetrees, the smell food on the grill and the aroma fine cigars dwelling in the air. A few yard away from Casa Italia, we stand underneath a canopy and next to the Budwieser stand (a sponsor for that night's fights). A fine day/night for boxing entreatment. A couples hours later the crowd watches, boo and cheer as these athletes slog away at each other. Oaklawn Illinois's Edward J Gutierrez( 210 lbs 14-0-1) starts off by giving a few head and body shots to Bolingbrook Illinois's Eric French (220 lbs 10-34-3). Both athletes slog each other as round one progresses, Gutierrez getting the better head punches as French taps Gutirerrez's abdominal area while occasionally coming up for a few head shots.
As round two comes to a start Gutierrez is the first one out of his corner. Bopping , weaving and connecting a few hear a few there. As French gets a little more familiar wit his appnote he does a better job in round two. Connecting a few to the Gutierrez's head. As we come up to round three both men seem to have slowed down just a bit, but still on their defense and their feet. Somewhere in the middle of round three Gutierrez lands a good left hook and drops French on to his left knee. As French manages to get up he seemed to have fallen slightly apart , but still finishes the round. With Gutierrez being the first one off his corner chair the fight continues. Both boxers start off with giving each other body shots. Gutierrez landing more than French, body and hits to the noggin. In round five Gutierrez and French seem to want to conserve some energy, with Gutierrez still landing the better punches. French looking a little frustrated notbeing able to land any good slugs to his opponent's body. Both men continue to box each other until they hear that bell ring. Before the start of round six Gutierrez comes up to French pats him on the back. With French's back facing Gutierrez, French turns around and nods his head up and down as if saying good fight. Definitely showing some good sportsmanship. As the bell rings both boxers come out exploiting on each other, exchanging of blow for blow. Both boxer landing some good hits on one another. Still Gutierrez againlanding more punches that his appnote. French fought throw the last round knowing that Gutierrez was putting this one under his belt. [Editor's note: Gutierrez was announced the winner by decision, although, oddly, the scores were not mentioned. In winning he successfully defended his Illinois State Cruiserweight title.] Lois Ann Theobold Vs. Jasmine Jenell Davis
While Jasmine Jenell Davis (138 lbs 1-2-0) waits inside the ring for crowd favored Lois Ann Theobold (137 lbs 2-3-1) she looks as if she just wants to get this match over with. Out of the corner of my eye comes this fighter in a red robe, the hood over the boxer's head only letting me see her left eye. As the fighter has help taking off the red robe this girl with corn rolls, tattoos on her arms and back and a determine look in her eyes appeaser. As her faithful fans cheer the fight starts. As soon as they hear that bell both ladies were up close and personal. Giving each other hits right on the kisser. The two exchanged punches briefly. Theobold landing some very good rights and lefts on Davis's head. A minute and 34 seconds in to the first round the referee breaks them apart, as Davis calls it quits. Theobold being a better boxer that Davis, she took that fight home with her. All in all, it was a fine way to spend a summer evening.
