Amateur Boxers Heat Up Hilton
By Katherine Dunn

The Knott Street club has staged matches in the Dishman Auditorium, and in the parking lot outside coach Joel Caldera’s Mexican restaurant. But this was their first time at the Hilton, and the lush environment didn’t detract from the general cheer or the enthusiasm of the crowd.

Six teams were represented in competition, from Tacoma to Albany. Members of the Knott Street Boxing Teams being inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame core on Oct. 11, were special guests. Introduced in the ring were former National amateur champ, A. Halim Rahsaan, former lightweight #1 world contender Ray Lampkin, and former heavyweight contender Thad Spenser—all graduates of 20th century Knott Street Teams.

Meanwhile the current Knott Street Team is still busy. Results of the ten bouts were as follows:

In Junior Bouts—boxers under the age of 16:

79 lbs, Nick Jefferson of Tacoma won over Effran Estrada of Beaverton PAL.

71 lbs, Lorenzo Caldera of Knott St won over Alex Flores of Beaverton PAL.

108 lbs, Narek Tifekchian of Knott St won over Pepe Herrera of Beaverton PAL.

78 lbs, Corey Hill of Knott St won over Oscar Herrera of Beaverton PAL.

123 lbs, Virgil Green of Vancouver PAL stopped Daniel Tooke of All American Boxing at the end of the first round. Referee Bill Thornberg administered a standing 8 count during the round for repeated head shots, and the ringside physician, Dr. John Denker,M.D., called the bout off at the end of the first round.

In Senior Bouts—boxers over 16 years of age:

132 lbs, Novice women, Mercedes Nunez of Albany Boxing won over Laura Valent of Knott St.

168 lbs, Novice, Marquise Weston of Tacoma won over Omar Nunez of Albany.

155 lbs, Novice, Josh Gonzalez of Knott St won over Craig Corder Jr.

163 lbs, Open, Cedric Armstrong of Knott St. won over Duane Welsch of Albany.

The Outstanding Boxer Award went to Cedric Armstrong of Knott St.
