A BISHOP WHO WANTS TO BE KING
Stoughton Slugger Gets Cocky With Kevin Watts Feb. 18

Always a bishop and never a king, Eddie Bishop hopes to soon trek his way up the New England hierarchy. Since turning pro in 1999, this scrappy welterweight has proven to be a worthy opponent for all pugs looking to indulge in a little strategic competition. In other words, the sly 30-year-old has always been willing to match his ring wits with all comers in the 147-pound class. On February 18, however, Bishop (8—1, 3 KOs) looks to check-mate adversary “Cocky” Kevin Watts (18-7, 7 KOs), highlighting a gallant evening of boxing brought to you by Cappiello Promotions, New England’s leading provider of fistic entertainment.

But when Bishop and his South Boston nemesis square off in this sizzling co-featured bout, you can expect anything but a chess match. “These two are going to be gunning for each other, that’s for sure,” says promoter Rich Cappiello. “This should be one of those back-and-forth affairs. That’s the one thing about this entire fight card. Not one guy fighting on it will have an easy go of it.” Sharing the spotlight with middleweights Rasheem Brown and Gabriel Holguin (who square off in the main event), Bishop hopes to pump high energy into the Mohegan Sun Arena with the supercharged Watts. “This is a big step up for Eddie,” says Cappiello. “He will be stepping in with a tough veteran with a solid record. We’ll know a lot more about Eddie Bishop by the end of the night.” Shortly after whacking out Patrick Lynch inside of one round in his pro debut, Bishop began to open eyes among New England fight fans by rattling off six straight victories, including solid drubbings of Kevin Carter and Marcus Luck. Bishop’s luck ran out, however, on June 25, 2004 when his quest for the best came to an abrupt halt at the hands of Philadelphia’s Fred Drayton. Eager to recoup from the second-round TKO defeat in Boston, Bishop unveiled his wrath upon William Foster on October 7, 2005, shutting out his foe on all three scorecards. Now, with a win over Watts, Eddie Bishop hopes to solidify his claim as a future threat to the welterweight throne. Tickets are now on sale for $75.00, $40.00 and $25.00, and available through Ticketmaster and the Mohegan Sun Box Office. Customers may log onto ticketmaster.com; call any Ticketmaster phone number; or visit any Ticketmaster outlet. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.
