WAUKEGAN, IL – He’s all action in the ring, and affable outside of it. “Macho” Miguel Hernandez, recent winner of the World Boxing Council United States Middleweight Title, will join his son, Joshua, 10, in serving at a literacy program held at Waukegan High School’s Upper Grade Center this Saturday, March 4. The two will model boxing skills in conjunction with a selected reading which, ironically, chronicles stable mate Jorge Gonzalez’ latest victory. Gonzalez was invited to join as well, but could not be reached at the time of this writing.
On February 10th, Hernandez, 19-3 with nine knockouts, won a whole new legion of fans as he won his title over “Dangerous” Ryan Lee Davis, 19-4-2, 8 knockouts, by majority decision at the United Bank Center in Miami. A popular Puerto Rican fighter hailing from Chicago, he fights for Dominic Pesoli’s 8 Count Productions.
His son, Joshua, gets straight “A’s,” plays the saxophone and holds the distinction of having more amateur boxing matches than his proud father. His shadow boxing routine, which he executes with all the flourish and aplomb of a young Sugar Ray Leonard, is a sight to behold and delights crowds regularly during his father’s ring entrances. Saturday’s literacy meeting will be held in Waukegan High School’s library from 9:00 A.M. until noon. The address is: 2325 Brookside Avenue, Waukegan, IL 60085. Phone is (847) 360-5621.
