CHICAGO – On the way to the gym today, World Boxing Council U.S.A. Middleweight Champion “Macho” Miguel Hernandez called to shed some light on a rarely seen side to WBC Light Middleweight Title holder Ricardo Mayorga.

During press conferences to build up their upcoming title bout, Mayorga said some very off color things about his opponent, Oscar De La Hoya, whom he will fight on May 6th at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino.

Prior to Mayorga’s title winning bout on August 13th, 2005 against Michele Piccirillo in Chicago’s United Center, Hernandez encountered Mayorga at the gym, which he elaborated on briefly via cell phone.

JUAN AYLLON: Tell us about your encounter with Ricardo Mayorga.

MIGUEL HERNANDEZ: He really doesn’t say much to people, to adults, so I thought he was cocky when I first met him. But, when he saw my son working out, he stopped his work out and talked with my son.

Had he been ignorant to my son, that would have been wrong. [However], he was really cool with my son. Here, he was very busy; he was fighting for the world title!

The day of the weigh in, he came in to train and he gave my son some tickets to go to the fights!

JA: Tell us what he said to your son.

MH: He told Josh if he kept training the way he was, he would be the next champion and to keep training hard. He and Zab Judahs’ father, the guy who was training him at the time, were very nice [to Josh].

JA: What do you think of his current behavior?

MH: I think he doesn’t need to do that. But, maybe that’s him doing his job trying to sell the fight so they’ll order Pay Per View. He is getting carried away, but I think that’s part of the show.
