Escalante vs. Ruiz for WBO-NABO Title; Mares vs. Morillo in Chicago on May 12th!
“We’ve got six very terrific fights on the card. Since we announced that Escalante was coming back to Chicago, the response from our fans has been fantastic. His fight with Jose Hernandez this past January at Cicero Stadium was a Fight of the Year candidate. He’s right back in a very tough twelve round bout against Juan Ruiz for the WBO/NABO Super Bantamweight title," stated Pesoli.
The 20 year old Escalante originally from Juarez, Mexico, now fighting out of El Paso, Texas sports a record of 11-1 with seven knockouts. Ruiz, from Santa Clarita, California is 21-2 with six knockouts. His most recent bout was a twelve round decision over Priest Smalls on November 12, 2005. This is Ruiz’s first defense of the title. The co-main even of the evening is a terrific eight round super bantamweight matchup between undefeated prospect Abner Mares, 8-0 (5) of Montebello, California and Edison Morillo, 7-2-2 (1) of La Vega, Dominican Republic. Said Pesoli, “I saw Mares in his win over Omar Adorno this past February at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. He’s a great looking prospect but Morillo should be a very good test for him.” In a special attraction bout of the evening, Chicagoland’s most popular women’s fighter, Rita Figueroa, 7-0 (3) is featured in an eight round rematch with Eva Lydia Silva, 4-5 of Ciudad Acuna, Mexico for the WIBA Federlatina Lightweight Title. “Rita and Eva just fought a terrific six round bout that was very close until Rita stopped her in the final round. Our fans truly enjoy seeing Rita fight and this title bout is a big opportunity for her” continued Pesoli. Rounding out the action packed card are three bouts featuring three of Chicagoland’s most popular fighters. In a six round bantamweight bout, Francisco Rodriguez, 7-0 (5), will battle Fidencio Reyes, 9-3-1 (3) of Garland Texas. Barbaro Zepeda, 5-6 (1) returns to the 8 Count Productions’ ring in an eight round featherweight bout against Juan Jaramillo, 5-3-1 (2) of Keizer, Oregon. Also making his return to the Aragon Ballroom is Melrose Park native, Jose Manuel Ortega, 6-1 (3) in a six round bout against Daniel Schleinz, 5-8-1 (3) of Duluth Minnesota, “Francisco’s developed nicely in his first seven bouts as a pro after having a terrific amateur career. Reyes is a very solid guy and should be another great test for Francisco.” Said Pesoli “Both Zepeda and Ortega are continuing to improve. Barbaro is coming off a terrific six round victory over Miguel Angel Figueroa on our MADNESS IN MARCH show. Our fans loved that fight and we’re very happy to bring Barbaro back.” The Aragon Ballroom is located at 1106 W. Lawrence Avenue on the north side of Chicago. Doors for this event will open at 6pm, with the first bell scheduled for 7pm. Tickets starting at $25 are available in advance by calling 312-226-5800.
