The winning streak began with bantamweight Emily Klinefelter (Iowa City, Iowa) taking on Leonoro Loria of Ecuador in her first round contest. Klinefelter piled on the points in the first round of boxing to build up a 15-point advantage and the win the bout on a stoppage due to the 15-point rule. International newcomer Akima Stocks (South Orange, N.J.) got off to a quick start in her light middleweight bout with Pamela Cevallos of Ecuador. Stocks turned it on early in the bout, stopping Cevallos in the first round of action to move on in the tournament. Middleweight Franchon Crews (Baltimore, Md.) also put a quick end to her bout with Canada’s Maude Bergeron. The hard-punching Crews stopped Bergeron in the second round of their bout to record her first international win.
Five United States boxers will compete on Friday, looking to duplicate the efforts of their first three teammates. Pinweight Colleen Loo (Mililani, Hawaii) will take on a boxer from the Dominican Republic in her first contest while four-time national champions Cheryl Houlihan (Norton, Mass.) and Elizabeth Quevedo (Southgate, Calif.) face off with Brazilian opponents. Featherweight Ronica Jeffery (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and welterweight Lisa Kuronya (Portland, Maine) will battle two Canadian world championships medalists. Jeffery will challenge 2005 World Championships bronze medalist Sandra Bizier while Kuronya takes on 2005 World Champion Mary Spencer.
