Team USA Records Ten Wins in the First Four Days at the 2006 Cadet World Championships


COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Team USA has an enjoyed an outstanding start at the 2006 Cadet World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey. The young team has won ten of their first thirteen bouts of the event with nine boxers advancing on in the competition.

Light middleweight Luis Arias (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Patrick Galmore (Lake Charles, La.) both earned first round wins on Saturday, defeating A. Mcmidez of Uzbekistan and G. Solska of Poland respectively.

The United States enjoyed an undefeated outing on day two with Glen Tapia (Passaic, N.J.) opening his first major international event with a second round stoppage outscored over Jamsran Chuluvbaatar of Mongolia and Dominic Wade winning a 25-9 decision over Nidari Ibelashvili of Georgia.

The team grabbed two more wins on Monday as pinweight Louie Byrd (Denver, Colo.) won a 23-16 decision over Abdul Wheed of Pakistan and light bantamweight Samuel DiPace (Las Cruces, N.M.) pulled out a 27-26 decision over Aider Khan of Pakistan.

Three more U.S. boxers recorded wins on Tuesday with two California natives and a Texan each grabbing wins. Light flyweight Randy Caballero (Coachella, Calif.) grabbed a 28-19 decision over Bhoopender of India in his opening bout while lightweight Javier Molina (Commerce, Calif.) joined him in the win column with an 11-7 decision over Sefa Karadeniz of Turkey. Light welterweight Gerardo Ibarra (Houston, Texas) rounded out the victors with a 19-18 win over Azerbaijan's Karimov Vugar.

Featherweight Manuel de la Cruz (Port Arthur, Texas) recorded a first round 3-2 paper scoring victory over D. Dzemiankov (BLR) on Saturday before dropping a second round stoppage loss to Shosanu Moskaleb (UKR) in his second bout of the tournament on Monday. Flyweight Andre Keys (Tacoma, Wash.) lost his first bout of the tournament to A. Vuluabdailai (KGZ) and bantamweight Roberto Marroquin (Dallas, Texas) dropped a 33-19 decision to Vladimir Saruhanyan of powerhouse Russia on Tuesday.

Louie Byrd, Samuel Dipace, Glen Tapia and Luis Arias will all compete in their second bout of the tournament on Wednesday while heavyweight Keith Tapia (Bronx, N.Y.) will take the ring for the first time.

The team will is being led by USA Boxing National Coaching Director Dan Campbell (Colorado Springs, Colo.); Al Simpson (Charlotte, N.C.) and Robert Martin (Washington D.C.). Carlos Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.) is serving as team manager for the event.

The Cadet World Championships showcases the best 15 and 16-year-old boxers in the world. The United States won five medals at the 2005 Cadet World Championships, including a gold medal by Isiah Thomas.
