YONKERS, New York—One of Chicago’s favorite traveling middleweight fighters, David “The Weezel” (sic) Estrada (10-9 and 7 KO’s), is on the road again. This time, he will be facing young knockout artist, Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (7-0 with 6 KO’s) on Friday, November 3, at a production called “Ballroom Boxing.” The event will be held at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City.
David Tua, a powerful heavyweight contender on the comeback trail, will fight one Abraham Okine in the main event. Tua KO'ed and drew with former Heavyweight Champ Hassim Rahman, and also lost to Lennox Lewis for the Heavyweight Championship in 2000.
Riding back to his hotel following the weigh-in, Estrada shared some of his thoughts on this last minute fight over his cell phone. “I’m fighting at the same weight, 160. (Quillin) made 159, I made 158. He’s 7 and 0 with six KO’s and I’m 10-9 with 7 KO’s,” he said. “I don’t know anything about him. I just know he’s tall, crafty and slick. He's pretty big out here. Everybody out here knows who he is. All I know is he’s tall and lanky. “David Tua’s fighting in the main event with some local guy. He’s the main event; I would probably say that 'Kid Chocolate' is the second big name in the event. “Of course, I’m going to give him a test. I’m the biggest name he’s fought. He hasn’t fought anyone like me who’s tall, got the reach, power. It’s going to be a good fight." Both Estrada and Quillin are listed at 6’ 1”.
Estrada continued, “I feel real good. I’m confident as always in shape and ready. I’m the seasoned veteran, this is my seventh fight this year. I’m busy. I’m going to keep it going. “Training went good and that’s why I took this fight. They called me at the last minute—they called me on Monday. I’m taking (the fight) because I know I can win. “If I was in it just for the money, I would have taken (former WBA Middleweight Champ William) Joppy when they called me for seven grand; I would have fought (former IBF Light Middleweight Title holder) Yory Boy Campas when they called me for 12 (grand) or (former WBO Welterweight and Light Middleweight Titles Holder) Daniel Santos. Actually, I don’t know which one—Santos or Campas—was for 12 grand. “The last fight I fought (a close decision loss to Louis Turner), I wanted to win. I was one round from a draw and I let it slip away. I want to bounce back and get a win this fight!
“And after this win, I will start waiting for phone calls. The phone’s always ringing because they know I come to fight, I come prepared and every fight I fight’s a good show. I’m not taking a dive. I’m coming here to win! “As always, thanks for the support, Chicago! I also want to thank my girlfriend, coach, chiropractor, personal trainer and friends. Thanks a lot for the support! Thanks a lot, Cyber Boxing Zone. “I’ll enjoy the ride while it lasts victorious.” And, once again, he'll be on the road again.
