11/10/2006 Archived Entry: "Andrade excels at World Cup"

Andrade excels at World Cup

PROVIDENCE (November 9, 2006) - Amateur boxing star Demetrius "Boo Boo" Andrade, competed in the 165-pound division rather than 152, joined 2004 U.S. Olympian Rau'shee Warren (119 lbs.) as the only members of Team USA to register two victories at the recent World Cup team competition in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Andrade, the No. 1 rated welterweight in the U.S. for the past two years, is the two-time U.S. National Championships and 2006 National Golden Gloves champion at 152 pounds. At the World Cup, Andrade defeated Rusian Safiullin (Kazakhstan) in the opening round, 17-7; lost to the eventual gold medallist from Cuba, Emilio Correa, 29-12; won a decision against Rahib Baylarov (Azerbaijan), 22-10. "I like competing in International tournaments because it gives me International experience, which is important because the International game is different than amateur boxing in the United States," Andrade remarked about his World Cup experience. "I felt good fighting at a higher weight (165). But I gave up a lot of weight because my opponents were natural 165-pounders who probably entered the ring around 170 pounds (due to water weight). I still want to qualify for Team USA at 152 pounds but I'd like to be eligible in both weight classes." Andrade, boxing out of 401 Gym in Cranston, plans to compete in Friday night's local U.S. Championships in Fall River and in January at the local Golden Gloves Tournament.
