Euro-Beat Update: Chagaev Tops Ruiz in WBA Eliminator!

By Per Ake Persson

DUESELDORF, Germany, November 18 -- Ruslan Chagaev won the WBA heavyweight eliminator against John Ruiz on a close, split decision. After 12 rounds, it was scored 117-111 and 116-112 for Chagaev and 115-114 for Ruiz. There were no knockdowns and many rounds were very close.

Ruiz made a bright, agressive start and used an effective right upercut to get to Chagaev in the first two. In the third Ruslan moved a lot better and was able to score with his southpaw left. Ruiz bled from the nose and it kept bleeding throughout the fight.

John mauled is way on the inside but wasnīt effective and it seemed like Chagaevīs fight. But Ruiz came back in the ninth and made it close.

WBA heavy champ Nikolai Valuev was ringside. A Valuev vs Chagaev fight is also a showdown between Sauerland Event and Universum and is likely to do well in Germany.

WBO I/C heavy champ Aleksander Dimitrenko won a landslide points victory over American Billy Zumbrun but failed to impress. It was scored 120-105, 119-107 and 120-106. Zumbrun was down in the first and looked outclassed but came back and had Dimitrenko in some problems in the third. The big Ukrainian was superior in every department but just couldnīt close the fight against a brave but limited opponent. Zumbrun had a point deducted in the tenth for repeated headbutts.

WIBF supermiddle champ Natascha Ragosina had nothing to beat in Scroller Carrington, who was stopped in the third.

GBU superfly queen Alesia Graf outscored Heather Percival after ten good rounds of boxing.

Dmitri Sartison outscored Latvian Jevgenijs Andrejevs over ten, supermiddles.

Chagaevīs chief sparring, Fernely Feliz stopped Russian Daniel Peretyatko, who didnīt come out for the sixth due to bad cuts.

Welters Maurice Weber and Frank Harroche Horta drew over six action packed rounds. Weber had Felix Sturm in his corner but still looked lucky to get a draw.

Universum returns to Dusseldorf and the Burg Wachter Castello January 27 with WBO lightheavy champ Zsolt Erdei on top. Zsolt was ringside here as well.

WBA lightheavy ruler Silvio Branco will defend the title against Stipe Drews but when and where isnīt ready yet.

Torsten May have reportedly turned down an offer to join RTL`s comeback shows with Axel Schulz and Henry Maske but his brother Ruediger will apparently give it another try.

There was a final ten count for EBU President Ruben Martinez, who passed away two days ago.
