12/20/2006 Archived Entry: "Enrique Palu Killed in Car Crash"

From The WORCESTER TELEGRAM & GAZETTE

By Mike Elfland

WORCESTER— Enrique Palau, one of the city’s top boxers, and a young woman were killed in a car crash on Grafton Street early today, police said.

Mr. Palau, 27, was at the wheel of a 2004 Honda Civic that apparently went through a stop sign at the end of Dorchester Street and crossed Grafton Street before slamming into a wall, according to police Sgt. John J. Fallavollita.

The crash occurred about 2:30 this morning.

Mr. Palau and his passenger, Amanda H. Snaras, 25, were rushed to UMass Memorial Medical Center – University Campus, police said. Both were pronounced dead shortly after 2:30 a.m., police said.

Police are continuing their investigation into the crash. Mr. Palau was headed east on Dorchester Street and failed to heed a stop sign at the intersection of Grafton Street, according to police. The Honda continued across Grafton Street and slammed into a stone wall near 420 Grafton St., police said.

No other cars were involved in the accident.

Mr. Palau, who lived at 47 Eastern Ave., was a big player in Worcester’s boxing circles. The junior middleweight was unbeaten, having last won on Friday – capturing a six-round decision in a match at The Castle in Boston. His promoter was city businessman Steve Tankanow and his trainer is former Worcester middleweight Sean Fitzgerald.

Enrique fought on my last two fight cards. As the promoter, I'm devasted by this double tragedy.I got to know him as a young man with unlimited potential, not only in the ring but as a man and father. Words cannot express my deep saddness at his passing> I was expecting to see him fight for me in either February or March. Hank Tuohy 617-842-8661
