Fres Oquendo (right) bounces a heavy right off Evander Holyfield's face in their November 10th bout
We accept that Fres could have been more, contributing to the decision. However, having said that, and now with the Compubox numbers in, they clearly show Fres overwhelmingly landed the cleaner and more solid punches, and in a greater capacity. Considering the 1st round flash knockdown, which was caused by nerves and butterflies (this was his first big fight in a few years) he bounced back and started landing his jab and right, took the mostly Holyfield crowd out of the equation, pelted Evander all night long and the result could be seen with the former champs face by midnight.
Holyfield said that Fres didn’t come to fight. He didn’t. He came to box. Holyfield wanted a war Fres gave him a boxing match. Fres fought his style, landed more, controlled the tempo, style, recovered from a 1st round knockdown, took the crowd out of the fight and finished respectively strong.
Yes he could have done more and should have stopped Evander. We feel that when you look at the fights scores, round by round we have the fight, worst case scenario 7-5, more like 9-3 for Fres. The last round I don’t even think Holyfield landed a punch to the head. Although Fres may not have been an exiting fighter, it doesn’t mean he didn’t win. Mayweather did the exact same thing the week before and is extolled as the best pound for pount fighter in the world. Fres is accused of running and scared. In conclusion and our final comment we would like to say that unknown to anyone except his immediate corner Fres fought this fight with Strep Throat and Tonsilitis and was only at about 50%. He was in the hospital, with 103 fever, unable to eat, sleep or even swallow fluids the week of the fight. He was diagnosed and given several medications and confined to bed rest and no exercise let alone a 12 round fight by TWO medical facilities one of which was UCLA Medical center. He felt sluggish and thought he might not have enough in the gas tank to try and knock Holyfield out. Against two doctor’s wishes and the general consensus around him, he heeded my advice and decided to go on with the fight and he fought with great will and heart for a man who should have been in bed resting.
Fres will fight Holyfield again for FREE, anywhere, anyplace anytime and will knock him out. We are here to fight ANYONE. Although most people will discount this as an excuse for Fres’ performance so be it. Actions speak louder than words and whoever wishes to sign on the dotted line, contact our promoter Lou DiBella and put up or shut up. I guarantee you will see a much different Fres Oquendo. Attached are the medical records (Unsolicited) AND Compubox stats to confirm and back up our statement.
John Sally should stick to watching Basketball and Dan Rafael should stick to a diet.
