West Portland Boxing Results at Tacoma Golden Gloves

(Press Release)

The West Portland Boxing Team competed in the 29th annual Tacoma Jr. Golden Gloves, held at the Al Davies Boys & Girls Club in Tacoma, WA on January 27th and 28th. Over 100 boxers competed in the two-day competition. The West Portland Team’s results were as follows:

Eric Chavez of Aloha defeated Noah Williams of Tacoma, to win the 9 year old, 75lb division. Eric was named outstanding boxer for the 9-10 year old division.

Anthony Lucero of Tualatin won two hard-fought bouts in the tournament. Anthony defeated Jorge Soto of Tacoma on Saturday, and Esequiel Sandoval of Seattle on Sunday to win the 85lb 11-12 year old division.

Carson Rose of Tigard stopped Jesus Soto of Tacoma in the second round to win the 80lb 11-12 year old division, and improve his record to 5-0.

Ben Torres of Beaverton lost a hard-fought decision to Junior Martinez from the Beaverton PAL on Saturday, but bounced-back to stop Delavia Spry of Olympia in the second round of their bout on Sunday. Ben competes in the 119lb 13-14 year old division.

Manual Torres of Beaverton defeated David Sandoval of Tacoma to win the 95lb 15-16 year old division in his only bout of the weekend.

Tigard’s Sammy Perez lost a controversial decision on points to Tacoma’s Jerrell Barbour on Saturday in the 125lb open 15-16 year old division. Sammy then faced defending national champion Andre Keys, also of Tacoma on Sunday, giving up an early lead but rallying to win the second half of a close bout, yet fell short of gaining the decision. Sammy has been boxing since age 8, and gave the defending national champion a close match in his home town.

Ramiro Ruiz of Hillsboro lost a controversial decision to Sequan McGlone of Tacoma in perhaps the most entertaining bout of the evening. Ramiro gave it his best effort against the more experienced McGlone, but wound up on the short end of a decision that could have gone either way. Ramio competed in the 132lb open 15-16 year old division.

Hillsboro’s Lisbet Vargas, competing in the 138lb female division, stopped Tara Tenochitlan of Seattle in the second round on Saturday, then followed that win with a decision win over Brandy Chin of Tacoma on Sunday, to win her division.

SW Portland’s Laura Valent defeated Veronica Soto of Tacoma on Saturday to win the 132lb female division. On Sunday, Laura boxed Stephanie Eggink of Seattle in a non-tournament bout, dropping a close decision on points.

Heavyweight Jeremiah Graziano improved his record to 2-0 with two KO’s by stopping John Leighton of Seattle in the second round of their bout, to win the novice heavyweight division in the senior (over 17) category.

The West Portland Boxing Team’s home is in the basement of the Garden Home Recreation Center. The team works out Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 6 to 8pm. Anyone interested in boxing is invited to drop by during regular team hours, or call (503) 245-5719 for more information.
