There’s no way to condense John Campi, Vice President of the Daily News Promotion and Community Affairs; guardian of the Golden Gloves; a traditional man with an eye towards the future. All I can say is that he’s impressive; a proud man whose passion for his work is contagious. John claims to be a true feminist – a man who doesn’t like women’s boxing but supports a woman’s right to box. He thinks a women’s ring should be fourth finger left hand but still brags about the battle-ready, female athletes who’ve roared through the doors of Madison Square Garden and into the arena. In other words, he doesn’t want his daughter to box, but he’ll defend your daughter’s right to.
Eighty years ago, on February, 14th, 1927, Paul Gallico and the Daily News gave a Valentine to the youth of the community. I wonder if they realized how much goodwill this gift would generate. Through the years, The Golden Gloves has provided a path for poor kids finding their way out of poverty; a sport that required little expense but lots of hard work.
