CORAL GABLES, Fla, March 5, 2007 –Alejandro Berrio (26-4,25 KOs) vowed he’d pack light for last weekend’s title bout trip to Rostock, Germany. And it’s a good thing he did, because last Saturday, Berrio decisively won the IBF Super Middleweight championship when he knocked out previously unbeaten Sergi Stieglitz (29-1-0), to earn the vacant title. The victory was sweet revenge for Berrio who had lost to Stieglitz in a controversial ring ruling in, 2005. “I’m thrilled to win this title this way ”, said the newly crowned IBF champ during a news conference in South Florida today . “I was not going to be denied.”

Berrio won decisively after landing a barrage of punches early in the fight. Then, the hard hitting Columbian finished off the native of Ejsk, Russia when he abruptly knocked him to the canvas in the third round. “I was not going to let Sergi, get that second wind, when I had my chance to put him away, I did.” Added Berrio.

These two international Super Middleweight Stars have gone to battle in a ring in Germany before; December 3, 2005, or 16 months ago to be exact. Berrio, lost by TKO when the bout was suddenly stopped in Stieglitz’s training residence of Magdeburg, Germany in the 11th round.

DRL’s director of Boxing Luis De Cubas has been predicting Berrio is on the verge of breaking through, and this victory validates his fighter’s determination and hard work. ”It was just a matter of time for Berrio to land the type of punch that got his peers to sit up and take notice – this victory over a undefeated fighter like Sergi in his own backyard does that. It’s left us asking who’s next?” stated De Cubas.
