Press Release

HOLLYWOOD, FL, June 5 – It was the culmination of a lifelong dream, and finally, Sultan Ibragimov can call himself ‘Champion’ after scoring a clear cut 12 round unanimous decision over Shannon Briggs last Saturday night to win the WBO Heavyweight Championship.

“I am proud to be a World Champion, and while I will enjoy some time off to visit with my family back home, I will be back in the gym soon because now the truly hard work begins,” said Russia’s Ibragimov, who befuddled the much bigger Briggs with his speed and tactical brilliance at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall.

With the win, Ibragimov improved his unbeaten record to 21-0-1 with 17 KOs.

“I would like to thank my entire team, from my promoters and manager to my trainer, Jeff Mayweather, for all their hard work and dedication and a special thanks to my dear friend Suleiman Kerimov for his continued support,” said Ibragimov. “Most of all, I thank my fans for sticking with me and supporting me throughout my career so far. I will continue to do everything in my power to make you proud.”

As for the future, the 32-year old southpaw’s game plan is simple.

“I will be a true World Champion and fight whoever is put in front of me,” he said. “My main goal is to unify the belts and be the only champion in the world. I want the title to mean something to everybody again, and the only way we can do that is to fight each other and see who will be the last man standing.”
