Press Release - Clampitt and Couch Put Women's Boxing in Spotlight Tonight
MASHANTUCKET, CT -- Three-time world champion Jaime "The Hurricane" Clampitt vies for her fourth world title tonight on ESPN2's "Wednesday Night Fights." In her way is five-time world champion, and women's boxing pioneer, Jane Couch, who defeated Clampitt via unanimous decision June 12th, 2004 in a bout that was eventually named Ring Magazine "Women's Fight of the Year." The two battle for the vacant IWBF world super lightweight title, the very same belt that Couch lifted from Jaime three years ago. Clampitt currently holds the IWBF world lightweight title.
"This is a big fight for me, but also for women's boxing," said Jaime, who brings a 17-4-1, 7 KO's record into the fight. "Our first fight was very exciting and I think this one will be great too. Anytime womens boxing has a chance to shine on national TV, we have to do our best to make it happen." The telecast begins at 10 PM tonight on ESPN2. The preceding show is college baseball, which has a chance of running a bit late. "I hope that the game and the late TV start doesn't keep people from watching," said Clampitt. "If the game is still going at 10 PM, I am sure it won't be long before it's over. Just keep checking back. If you are setting your TiVo's, make sure to tape the show after us too - just in case." At yesterdays weigh-in, Clampitt weight just one pound over the lightweight limit at 136, while Couch checked in at 139 lbs.
