Press Release - Potential War Cut Short From Accidental Cut It was expected that the co-feature bout on the Roy Jones - Anthony Hanshaw PPV event from Biloxi, Mississippi would be an all out "war" and provide fireworks to heat up the crowd anticipating the Jones bout. Unfortunately, the NABA Welterweight Championship bout between champion Oscar Diaz and challenger Juan Buendia never got past the 20 second mark. An accidental head butt caused a 2 inch gash on the left eyebrow of Diaz and prompted the ringside doctor to halt the bout in the first round. "I trained hard for this bout for 3 months and couldn't wait to get back into the ring," said the disappointed Diaz, "and to have it end like this is frustrating", "We're all disappointed the fight ended this way. Oscar was in such good shape and so mentally ready for this fight, we all anticipated an early night. Not like this though !' stated manager Lou Duva. Diaz trainer Tommy Brooks states, "we knew Buendia's style was that he came forward with his head, and we had trained for that, but it all happened so fast it was unavoidable" Diaz returned to New Jersey on Sunday and was taken to a surgeon where he received 45 stitches. His doctor has advised him that it will be 6 weeks before he can have contact, but can return to the gym in 7 days for conditioning work.
