By Ricardo Ibarra
Medina (15-1-2 6KO's), who is usually a slow starter, began the bout at a quick pace, stepping in with his jab and following up with right hands. A left hook to the chin pushed Gates (9-8 8KO's) back to the ropes where Medina pressed the action. Gates slowed his opponent's aggression as he countered with a solid left hook to the chin forcing Medina back to the center of the ring. Medina wisely closed out the rest of the round jabbing and moving. Gates found his opening in the second round countering Medina's right hand with hard left hooks to the chin. The hooks were hard enough to make Medina think twice before throwing his right hand, as he chose instead to lay back and jab. A big left hook pushed Medina back as they both opened up, trading hook for hook along the ropes in a wild exchange to close out the round. In the third round Medina pressed forward, snapping his jab, but a lazy right hand early in the round left him open for big left hook counter that landed right on the chin. Gates stepped it up and carried the early part of the round, jabbing and countering with his left hook, using Medina's early aggression against him. Favio settled down in the latter part of the round, moving well, jabbing, and snapping his right hand behind it. A big right from Medina snapped Gates' head back to close out the round.
