HOLLYWOOD, Fla., October 24 – It began quietly almost two decades ago, as three friends - Mitchell Cypress, Roy Nash Osceola, and Jacob Osceola – tried to figure out the best way to honor those who had served, and were serving, this country in the armed forces, especially since Roy’s son, a United States Marine, had lost his life in battle.

The three men decided on a Veteran’s Day celebration and barbecue, but before the day arrived, Roy passed on. Deciding to carry on with their plans, the celebration attracted many veterans from the Big Cypress Reservation, and as the years went on, this tribute to the men and women of the armed forces took on a life of its own.

“Before we knew it, we were making program plans and had Vets coming from the other reservations to join us,” recalled Cypress, Chairman of the Seminole Tribe of Florida. “We decided to hold the celebration inside the Big Cypress Field Office and not only invite Tribal vets but also veteran neighbors and friends. Within a short period of time, there was such a large response that it didn’t take long before there wasn’t enough room in the Field Office and we had to move to a larger facility. It was then determined that the Entertainment Complex would be the place to hold our Veteran’s Day Celebration.”

On Thursday, November 8th at 10am, the 20th annual Seminole Tribe of Florida’s Veteran’s Day Celebration will honor all who have served this country at the Big Cypress Entertainment Complex with a day of presentations, music, and tributes that anyone who has ever attended will never forget.

“The Veteran’s Day Celebration is always a special one for me, and I’m proud that we’ve been able to carry on and make it bigger and better every year,” said Cypress. “It’s what these heroes deserve.”

Admission for this special event is free.

To get to the Big Cypress Entertainment Complex, take I-595 West to I-75 North to Exit 49. Make a right at the exit and follow the road approximately 15 miles. The Big Cypress Entertainment Complex will be on your left hand side.
